Chelva Rajah SC, Director of SIAC, Appointed to Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal
21 June 2011, Singapore

Chelva Rajah SC, a Director of Singapore International Arbitration Centre (“SIAC”) and head of M/s Tan Rajah & Cheah’s dispute resolution team, has been appointed by the Commonwealth Secretariat, as a member of its Arbitral Tribunal.  Mr Rajah is the first Singaporean to be appointed to the Tribunal and will serve on the panel for a term of four years.

The Tribunal was established by the Commonwealth Secretariat in 1995 as an internal arbitral body to deal with contractual disputes between the Commonwealth Secretariat on the one hand, and its staff and any other person who enters into a written contract with the Commonwealth Secretariat on the other.

Appointment to the Tribunal is a great honour.  Members are recognised as persons of high moral character who currently hold or have held high judicial office in a Commonwealth country or who are jurisconsults with at least 10 years’ experience.

Chelva was President of the Law Society of Singapore from 1990 to 1992, Judicial Commissioner of the High Court of Singapore from 1995 to 1997 and was appointed a Senior Counsel on 10 January 1998.  He is on the panel of Accredited Arbitrators and was appointed Chairman of Maxwell Chambers in August 2008 until his appointment to the Board of SIAC in 2010.
